Grounding & Lightning Protection

What on Earth is Grounding & Counterpoise in Airfield Ground Lighting?

An earth grounding system is a very important safety feature in AGL systems. To be effective, the grounding system must have a very low resistance to ground.

In principle, the higher the inherent resistance of the grounding system, the greater the possibility a voltage could build up on any grounded equipment. When ‘built-up’ voltage discharges through a person, injury or death may result.

For this reason, and to ensure that a common ‘ground earth value’ is present and maintained across the AGL system in the field, and this includes a counterpoise earthing network when installed for lightning protection purposes, the effectiveness of a grounding system must be serviceable according to National Standards and is checked regularly.

A counterpoise earthing network when installed on airfields will provide some degree of protection from lightning strikes to underground power and control cables. Counterpoise is a good idea, and it works, but only works best when installed and maintained correctly.

We will discuss how counterpoises are installed to protect the circuits and equipment from lightning damage using a dedicated grounding system.

A key question for you >> How is an earth grounding system tested and is it part of your preventive maintenance process ??
