Our History

Foundations
1983 - 1990

Tailor Made Systems Ltd was founded in 1983. In 1991, TMS began its specialist involvement in airfield lighting when commissioned by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Defence, and the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency to study the real-world performance of airfield lighting systems.

This research laid the technical and scientific foundations that continue to underpin our work today.

MALMS Development
2000 - 2009

Building on knowledge gained through UK research programmes, TMS developed the Mobile Airfield Light Monitoring System (MALMS) — translating regulatory theory into a practical, deployable measurement solution for live airfield environments.

Expansion of Capability
2010 - 2017

The scope of MALMS products and services expanded significantly, evolving into a complete portfolio designed to support the efficient, effective, and compliant maintenance of airfield lighting systems.

Global Recognition
2018 - 2023

MALMS achieved widespread international adoption, with approximately 500 MALMS systems in operation worldwide. The system became widely recognised as a leading photometric measurement solution, supported by a policy of continual development and innovation.

2024 - Present

Recognising the growing need for practical competence alongside compliance, TMS Training was established to bridge the gap between regulation and real-world practice.
